Tips From A Socialite

So I was doing some research this morning and came across an interesting perspective on relationships. I felt it was note-worthy. Credit goes to Deshair Foskey, The Socialite.

Tips from a Socialite:

* Words are best used in quality, not quantity. Be selective…

* We’re no longer on the playground where making a friend was a game of tag away. Study the people that you hold close to you. Ask yourself if they make you better, and vice-versa.

* Make sure that you’re on the same page with those who matter to you. When real recognizes real and driven recognizes driven, you’re not only on the same page, your story of success shall be written with the same pen.

* If you don’t want your business to be out in the streets or used against you, don’t trust anyone with it.

The Fab Empire

Some of you know that I am part of a crew called G4 (to recap, visit the post titled THE REAL ESQUIRE). We go out of town to DC to throw Fashion Monster parties. Not every one gets a chance to come party with us; thus for those who miss out on all the festivities , let me take this moment to shout out my peoples over at The Fab Empire. Spearheaded by Joi-Marie,
T.F.E. have taken the art of critiquing parties to a revolutionary level. Based in Washington, DC, The Fab Empire is embarking on a Manifest Destiny in a social and cultural sense. In the words of the young black professionals over at T.F.E., The Fab Empire is "not just a community of citizen journalists nor is it just your source for community nightlife in your nearest city, it's everything fabulous."

Check 'em out.

Who Ate My Motherfu*kin Cheesy Bread

So the other night I'm in the studio with homeboy and during the recording session we get crazy hungry. My nigga says, "Yo, let's go get some cheesy bread from Dominoe's." Now I myself haven't eaten Dominoe's pizza since I was a teenager and I have never had the cheesy bread before. But I'm like, "F*ck it, it's 2008, time to try some new shit. So we order the pizza and cheesy bread and I was thinking if that 30 minutes or its free shit was still in effect, we would have been all good. Anyway, I had forgotten how good Dominoes pizza actually was. But nevermind that. This cheesy bread shit was a whole 'nother type of beast. I don't know what kind of seasonings they put into that joint, but dammmmm. Dominoe's is onto something with that right there. So I'm eating the cheesy bread thinking to myself how I'ma be rocking with this for a while. That's how I do when I come across something new that I like...

Case in Point:
So the next day my homeboy that I was recording with the night before stops by to pick up a copy of the song we did. I hadn't finished mixing it yet by the time he left the night before. Only now it seems he brought a friend along with him. He introduces me to the nice young lady. I smile and say make yourself at home (not knowing what was about to happen). Me & homey go into my studio and I play him the mix of our song. Homegirl comes back to where we at and asks if she could have something to drink. I said, "Sure, no problem; in fact, feel free to go in the fridge and pour yourself a glass of juice. The cups are near the sink.

Long story short,
Five minutes goes by and my homeboy and I have been listening back to our a record a couple of times. I start to smell the aroma of something cooking. And it smells mad good. I thought maybe my tenants were cooking or something. So I started thinking...damn I'm bout to "go in" on my cheesy bread I saved from last nite.

And here comes shorty walking back down the hallway as I'm making my way to the kitchen. She's wiping her mouth with a napkin, talkin' bout, "I hope you don't mind, but I ate the last piece of cheesy bread you had." What the F*ck!?!

Dumb It Down

So I may have been living under a rock or two for far too long. I say this because today is the day that I have declared myself a fan of Lupe Fiasco.

I respect him...

Scumbag

If you saw my video with my homeboy The Last American B-Boy for Mr. A&R then you are already familiar with the quality that he and I get down with when we shoot our own videos. So here is his video for one of his records entitled "Scumbag." Very cinematic, if i do say so myself.

Year Of The Monkey

- Chinese Zodiac -
Year of the Monkey
I wonder if people who know me who would agree with how the Chinese describe people who are born in the year I was born. Check it out.

No task is too great for the clever Monkeys. They master most anything. They have extremely charming manners that draw others. Monkeys solve difficult problems with ease. They are quick-witted,innovative, and they have total and intense belief in themselves. No one delights in their own accomplishments like the Monkeys. Enjoying themselves immensely, they try anything at least once! Monkeys are intellectual and their memory is phenomenal. They recall the smallest details of everything they have seen, read, and heard. They must depend on that memory since they have an otherwise untidy mind. Monkeys are wizards with money. They are original, shrewd, and when they need to, they can fool anyone. There are a hundred and one fantastic schemes they want to try, and you can bet they make some of them work. Even when they take you in, it is hard to be angry with them, or begrudge them anything. They don't care what opinions others have of them. They know they are lucky, and they also know they have the ability to change things when convenience calls. Monkeys are virtually unsinkable! When the odds are stacked against them, Monkeys know when to quit. Their timing is superb, and they will wait to try another time. If you try to trick Monkeys, they will probably catch you. They never make a move without a plan. They are great strategists. They can spot an opportunity in any form. They never miss a trick!
Monkeys are hard workers once they have a piece of the action. The bigger the piece, the better they do. Monkeys like to travel, and they want to do it first class. They need a certain amount of excitement in their lives.
Since Monkeys get what they want without too much trouble, they may not care about all their conquests. They lose interest quickly and must learn to finish what they start and take care of what they have. People always flock around Monkeys, but Monkeys don't trust very much. They know a select group of friends that they choose carefully. Money is a must for Monkeys, and they usually have it, or will be in the process of getting it.They know nothing is permanent. They improve and try to do better, and often amaze even themselves. Monkeys like facts and they hate to waste time. Always remember, Monkeys don't care if you approve of them or not, and if not careful, you will be eating right out of their hands! They are the ultimate diplomats and slip in and out of difficulties with ease.
Monkeys must be careful in romance, although clear-sighted, they are very critical and lose interest in anyone they can't consider their peer. They are vain and egotistical, but even that is to their advantage.
Monkeys are always out in front!

YUME Attacks!

Here are pics from last weekend's show. It was a spur of the moment performance but I had the pleasure of meeting some great people and seeing some fresh new talent. YUME Attacks!

FlyLadyDi

FlyLadyDi to be exact.

So the other night A Fly Guy found himself in the company of A Fly Lady... She's an ex-hip hop dancer turned world renowned painter and we had a gallery showing for her at our store (YUME) earlier this week. She hails from Toronto and definitely gets A Fly Guy's co-sign on her works of art. But if you want one of these hanging up over your mantle in your crib, I suggest you make sure you got your money right.

Let The Church Say 'AMEN'

So today I found myself browsing the Internet on my research game, and I came across the video below. It's Mase, aka Murder Mase aka Pastor Betha. I have known him to be a minister for years, but this is the first time I have actually seen or heard him preaching. I was a little skeptical at first, but I must say, the message was interesting. To me, it doesn't matter how much gun-talk he may have done in the past. We're all human, and none of us are above mistakes or missteps. View for yourself. Draw your own conclusions.

To Her - Live at SPUTNIK - Brooklyn, NY

They say the test of a true artist is the willingness to show their deepest vulnerabilities, subjecting themselves to possible ridicule, or judgments by outsiders. The footage above is of me performing at a spot in Brooklyn called SPUTNIK. The record I'm doing is another one from my debut album, GEORGETOWN. It's called "To Her" (You Don't Love Me). The concept of this record came from Chapter 4 in my brother's book Gunshots in my Cook-Up,
which bares the same name. In the chapter my brother touches on two very serious topics. One was about my mother's battle with breast cancer. I reserve sharing details or information on that topic as of now. The other topic he speaks about is how sometimes as a youg black male we allow ourselves to get consumed by anger and pain and do not always know the best methods of coping or dealing with issues at hand. In the case of my brother, his relationship pushed him to a breaking point one night. At the time, I never knew what was going on with the situation. I was in Miami back then, and I just remember my mother coming to me one night and saying she had to go to New York but never told me why. It wasn't until years later when I was reading this book that I realized what had happened to my brother. I was shocked reading his words. He had always been the epitome of "cool" to me; unfaseable. In hos book he mentions how we wished he had the power to reverse all that had happened in such a short instance; reform the glasses he smashed, send the vulgarities he cursed out back down his throat, his girl gliding backwards into the apartment as if in a slow motion rewind, to the point where they were back in the living room staring at each other. So to push the envelope of my own creativity, I took that situation and created this record from the perspective of me being Selwyn. I took it a step further and wrote the record in reverse. In two minutes and 37 seconds "To HER" takes you on a journey that begins in a hospital bed and ends in an apartment in Brooklyn Heights 24 hours prior. At the end of the footage I begin to break down and cry on stage because as I was performing the record, my mind journeyed to a place where I imagined what my life would have been like had the household liquids my brother consumed that night took him away from me and my family. I couldn't hold it in anymore.

Classic: Jay-Z- Hard Knock Life

50 Cent - "So Serious"

I like this joint. It's hilarious to me. The song was produced by a collective known as Da Gutta Fam. Shout out to my homey SUCCESS the Broker Genius. If you scroll down to my myspace player (shhhh...don't let Tom know) I got a new record on there called "Conscious" also produced by Da Gutta Fam. And If you scroll a little further down to my video for "Mr. A&R", that's another joint they produced. They got the heat!

Gotta Love 50!

YUME BKNY New Year's Eve

So I have finally recovered from my NYE escapades and dug up the pictures that were taken at me and my peoples' party at our clothing store. It had to be one of the best nights in existence. We had DJ SHARK fly in from Japan to rock the wheels of steel. I even got the crowd hype when I jumped on the turntables under one of my many identities (DJ Fly Guy- FG for short). Kapps, Outasight, Wordspit and myself all hit the stage to give the already drunk crowd even more reason to get hype right after the ball dropped. We popped champagne with KESH, SWEATSHOP LABOR, BOY BOY, MIA and the wonderful people at HUGS. It was a crazy night, big shouts to LADY DI and PRINT holding it down for the photo shoot, TOUR MAGAZINE, NYSD, ASSATA, LA FEMME, and everyone else that made the night crazy! LOOK OUT FOR CHECK YOUR STYLE! JANUARY 25TH @ YUME BKNY Kesh is on the wheels of steel this time around alongside DJ FLY GUY, IT'S GONNA BE CRAZY!! Stay tuned for the flier. Peep the pics.
